The role of prosecutors in upholding justice and acting in the public interest was underscored at the opening of the Basic Prosecution Training Course 2026 earlier today.

Officiating the opening ceremony, Attorney General and Public Prosecutor Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Nor Hashimah Haji Muhammed Taib emphasised that prosecutors must make decisions fairly and independently, in accordance with the law and based on facts that can be proven by admissible evidence. In her welcoming address, she highlighted that prosecutors play a central role in the criminal justice system and bear a responsibility not only to secure convictions, but to ensure justice is served in every case.

The two-day course, organised by the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers, is aimed at strengthening participants’ professional competence and courtroom advocacy skills through structured and practical training. A key feature of the programme is the introduction of the Hampel Advocacy training method, which is being utilised for the first time in the training of prosecuting officers from law enforcement agencies. The method allows participants to learn through demonstration, guided practice and structured feedback, with the objective of enhancing effective courtroom advocacy.

A total of 41 officers are attending the course, comprising personnel from the Attorney General’s Chambers, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force, Narcotics Control Bureau, Immigration and National Registration Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department, the Revenue Division of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Department of Labour and Tabung Amanah Pekerja.
