Brunei Darussalam and China have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation between their prosecution services, particularly in addressing technology-driven and transnational crimes.
The agreement was signed on October 21 at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah during the 16th China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference.
The signatories were Attorney General and Public Prosecutor Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Nor Hashimah Haji Muhammed Taib and China’s Chief Grand Prosecutor and Prosecutor General Ying Yong.
The memorandum builds on an earlier agreement signed in 2002 and aims to broaden cooperation between the two countries’ prosecution services.
It places particular emphasis on strengthening capabilities to address emerging crimes involving artificial intelligence, financial offences such as online scams, and offences involving cryptocurrencies and virtual assets.
In her remarks, the Attorney General highlighted the importance of cooperation in protecting children in the digital space. She expressed hope that the agreement would strengthen the partnership and support greater joint efforts to combat transnational crimes as threats continue to evolve across borders.
