ASEAN judges visit Supreme Court for trafficking case exchange

Supreme Court

Participants of the ASEAN Multilateral Judicial Knowledge Exchange (JKE) on Victim-Sensitive Adjudication of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Cases visited the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam on 5 February 2026.

The delegation paid a courtesy call on Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong, exchanging views on regional judicial cooperation, judicial education, and victim-centred adjudication of TIP cases.

Following the call, the Supreme Court conducted a case study session based on a previous Brunei case, adapted for learning purposes. Participants discussed the judicial handling of trafficking cases across pre-trial, trial, and sentencing stages, sharing experiences from other ASEAN jurisdictions.

The JKE, a project of the Council of ASEAN Chief Justices’ Working Group on Judicial Education and Training, is supported by the ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking Programme and the UNODC. It aims to strengthen judicial capacity, promote best practices, and enhance regional collaboration on trafficking in persons cases.
