Trafficking in persons is a serious, borderless crime that violates human dignity and undermines the rule of law. A firm, coordinated, and victim-sensitive judicial response across ASEAN is essential. In Brunei Darussalam, the judiciary plays a vital role in ensuring trafficking cases are adjudicated fairly, consistently, and with due sensitivity to victims.

Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong said this on officiating the Cultural Night hosted by the Supreme Court at J Hotel on Thursday.

The event is part of the ASEAN Multilateral Judicial Knowledge Exchange (JKE) on Victim-Sensitive Adjudication of TIP Cases. The programme brought together judges from ASEAN Member States, judicial training institutions, and regional partners, including the Australian High Commission and UNODC.

Cultural performances by Senandung Budaya from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports provided a showcase of Brunei’s cultural heritage and a welcome respite from the substantive discussions of the JKE programme.
