Regional and international cooperation is essential to effectively combat cross-border intellectual property (IP) infringement, Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Dayang Hajah Nor Hashimah Haji Muhammed Taib said yesterday.
Speaking at a seminar on “Digital and Online Intellectual Property Infringement and Enforcement”, she highlighted the shared responsibility of protecting intellectual property in an increasingly digital marketplace.
The Attorney General, who is also the Registrar of Trade Marks, Patents and Industrial Designs, said emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), present both opportunities and challenges, raising questions surrounding ownership, authenticity and accountability.
She stressed the importance of strengthening IP enforcement as digital technologies continue to reshape the way creative works, innovations and businesses operate.
Her remarks were made at the seminar organised by the Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO) at the Dewan Jubli Emas, Law and Courts Building, Attorney General’s Chambers, in conjunction with the annual IP Enforcement Week observed by ASEAN Member States under the ASEAN Network of Intellectual Property Enforcement Experts (ANIEE).
The seminar aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of Brunei Darussalam’s IP enforcement landscape, current challenges in the digital environment and practical measures to address online infringement.
Speakers from BruIPO, the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), Royal Brunei Police Force, Law Society of Brunei Darussalam, Department of Intellectual Property Thailand and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shared insights during the event.

Discussions covered practical approaches to tackling online infringement, the impact of emerging technologies such as AI, and the importance of stakeholder cooperation in building a trusted digital marketplace.
The seminar brought together representatives from government agencies, the legal sector and other relevant stakeholders.
BruIPO said the event reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration and enforcement capacity in addressing digital and cross-border IP infringement, while promoting greater confidence in the digital marketplace.
Continued cooperation and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders will help foster an environment where innovation and creativity can flourish for the benefit of businesses, consumers and the wider community.
