A delegation from the ASEAN Law Association (ALA) Brunei Darussalam participated in the 15th ASEAN Law Association General Assembly, the 47th ALA Governing Council Meeting, and the ASEAN Law Conference 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 19 to 24.
Led by ALA Brunei Darussalam Chair Judicial Commissioner Muhammed Faisal PDJLD DSP Haji Kefli, the delegation comprised representatives from the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam, the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), and the Law Society of Brunei Darussalam.
At the opening ceremony on July 21, Judicial Commissioner Muhammed Faisal delivered welcoming remarks on behalf of the Brunei delegation, highlighting ALA Brunei’s contributions over the past year, including its involvement in the Crossroads Working Group, the Standing Committee on Women in Law, and the Honorary Secretaries Meeting.
During the 47th Governing Council Meeting, delegates approved the establishment of nine new Standing Committees following recommendations by the Crossroads 2 Working Group. The committees will focus on areas including business, trade and investment law, legal education, technology and innovation, alternative dispute resolution, cross-border insolvency, transnational legal practice, access to justice, women in law, and the future development of ALA. The reforms are aimed at strengthening institutional continuity and supporting greater harmonisation of laws across ASEAN.
As part of the ASEAN Law Conference, Deputy Senior Counsel at the Attorney General’s Chambers, Hajah Norhijradini Haji Saidi, represented Brunei Darussalam as a speaker during a session on environmental law and ASEAN’s responses to emerging carbon regulatory frameworks. She joined fellow panellists from Indonesia and Thailand to discuss legal approaches to climate-related developments and the transition towards net-zero emissions.
On July 22, Brunei Darussalam joined other ALA member states in signing the ASEAN Law Association Women in Law Pledge, witnessed by outgoing ALA President Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. Developed under the theme “Lead, Leverage, Liberate”, the pledge reaffirms ASEAN’s commitment to promoting gender equality, empowering women in the legal profession, and ensuring equal opportunities in shaping justice across the region.
Brunei Darussalam also made its debut in the ASEAN Moot Competition, with a team of fourth and fifth-year law students from UNISSA’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Faculty of Law representing the country. Their participation marked Brunei’s first appearance in the regional competition and a significant step in strengthening its engagement with ASEAN’s legal education community.
